Reiter, Josef#

Reiter, Josef, b. Braunau (Upper Austria), Jan. 19, 1862, d. Bad Reichenhall (Germany), June 2, 1939, composer. 1908-1911 director of the Mozarteum in Salzburg, 1917/18 musical director of the imperial court theatre. Was known mainly for his songs and choir compositions, his operas were not successful, his orchestral and chamber music show a Classicist influence. 1938 wrote a cantata on the "Anschluss".

operas: Der Bundschuh, 1894; Klopstock in Zuerich, 1894; Der Totentanz, 1908; Der Tell, 1917. - Stage music to F. Raimund´s "Der Bauer als Millionaer", 1918. - Goethesymphonie, 1931 (dedicated to A. Hitler). - Masses, 150 songs and ballads, 300 choral pieces, 40 piano and organ pieces.
