Vienna, May 3, 1912, d. Vienna, Oct. 6, 1980, mechanic, politician (Austrian Social Democratic Party, SPOe). 1934/35 and 1939-1943 imprisonment; 1945-1949 member of the Bundesrat, 1949-1957 member of the Nationalrat, 1957-1973 member of the Landtag of Vienna and member of the Vienna City Council; 1959-1970 Vice-Mayor and 1970-1973 Mayor and Landeshauptmann of Vienna. In the 1950s opposed the construction of the Vienna underground system; resigned after the negative outcome of a public opinion poll about a construction project on the area of the Sternwarte park in Vienna. Made important contributions to social and financial policy.
