Kössen#
Koessen, Tirol, municipality in the district of Kitzbuehel, alt. 589 m, pop. 3,443, area 69.34 km2, bi-seasonal tourist resort (524,572 overnight stays, mainly in summer), situated at the northern foot of the Zahmer Kaiser mountain, near the border to Bavaria (Germany).- Grenzlandhalle congress centre, office of the customs police, 1st Austrian school of civil aviation for hang gliding and sports parachuting, sanatorium run by the regional health insurance agency. Service sector (especially hotels) dominates, knitting and fulling industry, building industry, wood processing.- From the 16th to the 19th century lead and iron were mined; Baroque parish church (1719-1722) with Gothic west tower and fresco by S. B. Faistenberger; Baroque chapels (Ausserkapelle and chapels in Klobenstein and Bichlach); smeltery with frescoes (around 1775) in Bichlach.
