Kren, Kurt#
Kren, Kurt, b. Vienna, Sept. 20, 1929, d. Vienna, June 23, 1998, filmmaker. Emigrated to the Netherlands in 1939, returned to Austria in 1947; 1952 began working in film; 1957 first short film, "1/57: Versuch mit synthetischem Ton"; 1960 "2/60: 48 Koepfe aus dem Szondi-Test". From 1964 documented Viennese Actionism (1968 on the cover of "Time Magazine"). 1968-1989 lived in the USA and then returned to Vienna, where he created such late works as "tausendjahrekino" (1995) and "50/96: Snapshots" (1996). K. developed pioneering avant-garde filming techniques. He and P. Kubelka are considered the foremost Austrian filmmakers after World War II. His entire oeuvre (about 50 films) comprises less than 3 hours of total running time. 1996 one-man exhibition in the Vienna Secession; retrospectives in London, Paris and New York.
