Meidling#
Meidling, 12th district of Vienna, area 8.21 km2, pop. 79,592 (1991); since 1890/92 formed of the municipalities of Lower Meidling, Upper Meidling, Gaudenzdorf, Wilhelmsdorf, Hetzendorf and Altmannsdorf. Zentralberufsschule (Central Vocational School); Meidling Cemetery and South-West Cemetery; rehabilitation centre, Federal Office for the Control of Virus Epidemics (Bundesamt fuer Virusseuchenbekaempfung), hospital for industrial accidents, hostel for homeless people; home for abandoned animals; Office for Military Equipment and rural police command unit (Heeres-Materialamt and Landesgendarmeriekommando) for Lower Austria (former Heckenast-Burian Barracks); "Am Schoepfwerk" large-scale housing estate (1975, V. Hufnagel and team of architects), numerous council houses.
In Meidling (first mention around 1140 as "Murlingen" in the
possession of Klosterneuburg Abbey) the Thermenlinie reaches the area
of Vienna: sulphur springs had already been discovered in Roman times
(Pfannsches Mineralbad, mineral bath, and Theresienbad, public bath).
Former imperial hunting seat (1705), was later turned into an imperial
factory for woollen fabrics, then theatre (until 1874, demolished
1884-1902; today Theresienbad). Hetzendorf Palace with Modeschule der
Stadt Wien (Vienna School of Fashion); former Tivoli amusement park,
Wien-Meidling railway station (Schnellbahn suburban service, Badner
Bahn train, U6 underground, tram), Haydnpark (abandoned cemetery with
Haydn gravestone); museum of local history and culture; several modern
churches (Gatterhoelzl, Maria Lourdes, Namen Jesu and Neu-Margareten).

chocolate, textiles, furniture, shoes, etc.).
