Schlierbach#
Schlierbach, Upper Austria, municipality in the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems, alt. 478 m, pop. 2,515, area 18.44 km2, old monastery settlement in the upper Kremstal valley. - Schools: Stiftsgymnasium secondary school, school of agriculture, agricultural vocational school, seminar centre; cheese dairy, glazing and glass painting workshops (run by the monastery), wood-working industry, building trade, packaging industry, summer tourism (17,523 overnight stays in 1992). - The Cistercian monastery (built in 903 as a fortress) was run as a convent 1355-1556 and was taken over by monks from Rein in 1620. The Baroque monastery was built 1672-1712 by P. F. and C. A. Carlone and consecrated in 1726. The interior of the church (built 1680-1683) is a masterpiece of Austrian Baroque; richly decorated with stucco work and frescoes; library (1712), "Bernhardisaal" grand hall, abbey tower and cloister.
