Starhemberg, Ernst Rüdiger Fürst, geb. 1899#
Starhemberg, (Prince) Ernst Ruediger, b. Eferding (Upper Austria), May 10, 1899, d. Schruns (Vorarlberg), March 15, 1956, politician, leader of the "Heimwehr" (para-military force). 1919 joined the volunteer "Freikorps Oberland" corps for the attack of the ´Annaberg´ hill in Upper Silesia and on Nov. 9, 1923 took part in Hitler´s march on the ´Feldherrenhalle´ on Odeon square in Munich; 1929 leader of the Heimwehr in Upper Austria, 1930-1936 Federal Leader of the para-military "Heimatschutz" organisation. He supported the Austro-fascist policy of E. Dollfuss; after the latter's death Federal Leader of the conservative organisation Fatherland Front from July 1934 until May 1936; deposed by K. Schuschnigg because he supported rapprochement with Italy; from Sept. 30 until Dec. 4, 1930 Interior Minister, from May 17, 1934 until May 14, 1936 Vice-Chancellor; 1937 emigration, 1942-1945 in South America. His return in 1952 called forth strong protests on the part of SPOe (Austrian Social Democratic Party).
