Studied economics in Vienna; from 1975 employed by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (Austrian National Bank); 1981-1984 economic and political advisor of Finance Minister H. Salcher; 1985 deputy director of the economics department of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank; since 1997 member of its Executive Board; since 1998 Vice-Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and of the International Monetary Fund.
