Keil, Josef#
b. Liberec, Czech Republic (then Reichenberg), Oct. 13, 1878, d. Vienna, Dec. 13, 1963, archaeologist, 1904-14 secretary of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Smyrna, from 1914 in Vienna; 1926-1935 leader of the excavations in Ephesus, 1925-1927 and 1936-1951 professor at the University of Vienna, 1927-1935 in Greifswald, 1951-1956 co-director of the Oesterreichisches Archaeologisches Institut (Austrian Archaeological Institute). His major achievements were the excavations at Ephesus and the publication of the ancient inscriptions of Asia Minor.
