Silz#
Silz, Tyrol, municipality in the district of Imst, alt. 654 m, pop. 2,245, area 65.67 km2, winter tourist resort (129,547 overnight stays) in the Upper Inn valley. The winter sports resort of Kuehtaiis part of Silz. - District Court; district forestry inspectorate; St. Petersberg monastery of the Order of the Cross; Sellrain-Silz storage power station (constructed in 1981, 500 megawatts); and TIWAG power station at Silzerberg; silk weaving, wood processing. Between 1629 and 1748 passion plays were performed in Silz. - Parish church (1846-1848); Angerkapelle chapel (1634) on the village common; octagonal late Baroque Mount Olive chapel (second quarter of the 18th century); St. Petersberg castle (documented mention in 1090/97) with Romanesque keep and free-standing tower; house of a religious order since 1969; beautiful Upper Inn valley farmsteads. In 1857, seven families and 20 single persons emigrated to Pozuzo (Peru).
