Hoffmann, Johann#
b. Vienna, May 22, 1803, d. Vienna, Sept. 13, 1865, singer and theatre manager. 1826 debut and a two-year engagement as a singer at the Kaerntnertortheater, later at various theatres in German-speaking countries, incl. in Riga, where he managed the theatre 1840-1844; guest performances in Germany; 1846 managed the Staendisches Theater in Prague, 1852 the Stadttheater in Frankfurt am Main, 1855-1865 the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna. H. commissioned the architects F. Fellner and H. Helmer to build the Thaliatheater, which he managed 1856-1865 (1857 premiere of R. Wagner's "Tannhaeuser" in Vienna).
