Marterln#
Waycrosses (Marterln), The term originally referred to small shrines set up at the place of an accident; mainly wooden crosses with plaques bearing a picture of the deceased and a description of the accident. The word "Marterl" is derived from the German expression "Marter" (torment) which in the 15th century applied exclusively to a representation of the Passion. Expiation agreements formerly often stipulated the setting up of a small crucifix as a sign of atonement. Today the term "Marterl" refers to all kinds of ( Wayside Shrines).
