Bourbon Street Bourbon St, New Orleans, LA, USA is a street in the French Quarter, New Orleans' oldest neighborhood. It extends 13 blocks from Canal Street to Esplanade Avenue. In the 1690s the French claimed Louisiana as a colony and in 1721, the royal engineer, Adrien de Pauger designed the city's street layout, naming the streets after French royal houses and Catholic Saints. Bourbon Street got its name from France's ruling family, the House of Bourbon. As a result of a major fire in 1788 80% of the city's buildings were destroyed. Given to the Spanish in 1763 they rebuilt many of the damaged buildings and that is the reason why Bourbon Street and the French Quarter display more Spanish than French influence.
