Melan, Josef#
b. Vienna, Nov. 18, 1853, d. Prague (Czech Republic), Feb. 6, 1941, bridge builder, father of Ernst Melan. Professor at the Universities of Technology in Vienna, Bruenn (Brno) and Prague. Invented a new construction method for bridges which was particularly suited to the construction of arches using reinforced concrete ("M. construction"), designed numerous bridges in Europe and in the USA.
