Rowing came to Austria from England. In 1863 the first rowing club in Austria was formed (LIA Wien), and in 1891 the Austrian Rowing Association (OeRV) was established. Since 1956 races in all seven of the Olympic rowing divisions have been held at the Austrian Rowing Championships (singles, coxed and coxless doubles, double-sculls, coxed and coxless fours, and eights). Women's championships have been held since 1958. Austria has been a member of the International Rowing Federation (FISA) since 1934. In 1991, the world rowing championships were held in Vienna on the Danube. 1992 was the most successful year for Austrian rowers to date; A. Jonke and C. Zerbst won the Olympic silver medal in double-sculls in Barcelona, and Austrians took a total of two gold, five silver and three bronze medals in different disciplines at World and European championships. In 1994 the OeRV counted over 8,000 members in 89 associations.
