Spanische Reitschule#

Spanish Riding School (Spanish Court Riding School) in Vienna, the oldest riding school in the world, cultivates the classic art of haute ecole riding. The Spanish Riding Stable already existed in 1572, and only horses bred from Spanish stock were admitted. Today's Lipizzaner Horses are descendants of the cross-breeding between horses from the karst region and a traditional Spanish breed of horses (Andalusians). The building of the Spanish Riding School is part of the Hofburg, it was commissioned by Emperor Karl VI and built by J. E. Fischer von Erlach in 1735. Currently the Spanish Riding School comprises 70 Lipizzaner stallions of the strains Conversano, Favory, Maestoso, Neapolitano, Pluto and Siglavy. During World War II the Spanish Riding School was moved to a site away from Vienna and remained there for over a decade, it was re-opened in 1955. Up to 1918 the horses were bred in Lipica (then Lipizza, in Slovenia) near Trieste, now they are bred at the Federal Stud at Piber (near Koeflach, Styria). There is a Lipizzaner museum at the stables in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna.
