Schon von weitem ist die schwimmende Stadt im Meer zu erkennen, das alte Gallipoli Gallipoli, Italy , gegründet von den Griechen als 'kale polis', als 'schöne Stadt'. Der ganz große Reichtum kam jedoch erst im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert mit den Ölmühlen. Das aus Oliven gepresste Lampenöl aus Gallipoli leuchtete von Rom bis London und von Amsterdam bis St. Petersburg und Istanbul. Fast 300 Jahre lang war die Stadt der wichtigste Ölhafen des Mittelmeeres und wurde schnell zur kosmopolitischen Metropole. Erst die Erfindung des Petroleums führte ab 1850 zum Niedergang des lukrativen Geschäftes.
Yet from afar you can see the floating city in the sea, the ancient Gallipoli Gallipoli, Italy , founded by the Greeks as 'kale polis', the 'beautiful city'. However, the city's bonanza period started only in the 17th and 18th centuries with its oil mills. Gallipoli's lamp oil shone from Rome to London and from Amsterdam to St. Petersburg and Istanbul. For almost 300 years, the city was the main oil port of the Mediterranean and quickly became a cosmopolitan metropolis. It was not until 1850 when the invention of petroleum caused the lucrative business's downfall.
