Spain comes second after Switzerland as the state with the highest altitude in Europe. One third of the country lies about 800 meters above sea level. Two large mountain systems, the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains Spain, Pyrenees dominate the north. Crossed by deep canyons, the mountains represent a climatic boundary. Further south in some places only little rain falls, so that desert-like landscapes arise. Culturally seen, the mountains form a barrier that even the Moors could not break through. The varied landscape has always provided space for cultural niches and independent historical developments. It is one of the first populated regions in Europe and still home to the oldest people of the continent.
Spanien ist nach der Schweiz der am höchsten gelegene Staat Europas. Ein Drittel des Landes liegt über 800 m Seehöhe. Zwei große Gebirgssysteme, die Pyrenäen und die kantabrische Kordillere Spanien, Pyrenäen prägen den Norden. Die von tiefen Schluchten durchzogenen Berge stellen eine klimatische Grenze dar. Weiter südlich fällt an manchen Stellen nur mehr so wenig Regen, dass wüstenhafte Landschaften entstehen. Auch kulturell bilden die Gebirge eine Barriere, die nicht einmal die Mauren überwinden konnten. Die vielgestaltige Landschaft bot schon seit jeher Platz für kulturelle Nischen und eigenständige historische Entwicklungen. Sie gehört zu den am frühesten besiedelten Regionen Europas und beherbergt bis heute das älteste Volk des Kontinents.
