Die Straßenschilder und die wenigen gesprochenen Sätze in Farsi legen die
Vermutung nahe, die Geschichte spiele in Iran, der Film wurde jedoch in der
kalifornischen Stadt Taft gedreht. Auf die Frage von Filmproduzent Roger Cor-
man, ob die Regisseurin lieber in Iran, „on the actual locations“, gedreht hätte,
antwortet diese Folgendes:
I do think it’s a fairytale and for me it’s just an Iran of my
mind. Film is an opportunity to make your own universe,
make your own world. I think that’s what is exciting and
wonderful about it. […] The great thing about art is that the
limitations are actually the thing that encourages the crea-
tivity and push you to new places. I wanted to do this thing,
ok so I cannot do it there, but then it became this limitless
to really make my own place, make my own rules: we
made the money, we reinvented the posters, the street
signs, it was like really glorious, like making a world, that’s
one of the best parts. („Q&A“)
